Supercali

To be honest, I didn’t know exactly what this project would become when I first imagined it. It just popped out of my mind that it would be something fun and I loved the word "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" from Mary Poppins. I’ve always loved the word, but it has also challenged me at times ever since I watched the movie three years ago. Still, the word itself is nonsense, yet it carries a feeling of joy, wonder, and something extraordinarily good. I became curious: what might Supercali mean to each of us in Rawcus?

I also wanted to invite audiences to play with the word - speaking it aloud, fingerspelling it, and discovering what it means for them. It’s a challenge, but also a joy. This exhibition asks: what does Supercali feel like in a different world shaped by our creativity and imagination?

Rawcus itself comes from the word raucous meaning noisy, full of energy, and alive with creativity. That feels true for this ensemble: everyone is unique, and everyone brings their own spark. When I asked the ensemble what Supercali meant to them, the answers were as diverse as the people; “explorations,” “voice,” “football,” and more. I gathered all of these ideas and transformed them into a collective canvas.

In May 2025, I led members of the Rawcus ensemble through two visual art workshops exploring creativity and collaboration. We painted with our bodies, with squeegees, with sponges using colour as a language of expression. Each ensemble member created their own small artwork, reflecting their personal inspirations and interpretations of creativity.

Together, these individual works became Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious: a vibrant wonderland of expression woven from 14 unique imaginations. It’s about connection, community, and allyship. It's about celebrating what happens when we come together to create.
